St. Louis MOWell, the unthinkable happened.  As I was sitting in my living room I heard a loud explosion outside and low and behold, a large diesel truck had plowed into my van as it sat parked on the street outside of my home.  Believe it or not, this is the second time this is happened to us within the last year…and we don’t necessarily live on a busy street!  As I looked at my van with the back axle clearly in bad shape and a torn up tire that is tilted at an awkward angle, it is clear that my 12 year old minivan is totaled.  Knowing that I wouldn’t receive much money from the insurance company, I started looking online to see what kind of deals I could get on a pre-owned car.  It seems unreal that yesterday I was driving around perfectly content in a car that was paid for, and that I had no intentions on getting rid of any time soon…but that is just the way life works sometimes.

The Evolution of Car Keys

Up until the mid 1990’s all cars came with a simple basic key which served the purpose to simply start the vehicle, or shut it off. However, as it currently stands most cars come with a remote transmitter on the key while other vehicles don’t even require the key to start the engine at all. With this new technology there can be hefty replacement costs.

In the 1990’s if you had misplaced your car key you could simply have another made at the dealership for a small fee. However, having a key made with a new remote transmitter can cost your four times as much as a standard key. During the 1990’s manufacturers began putting a transponder chip in the head of the key. This would signal to a receiver in the ignition and tell the vehicle whether or not it was the correct key. Only the correct key would turn and allow the engine to be started. The keys containing a transponder would have to be programmed by the dealership in order for them to work. Just the same, if you would like to copy the key or replace a key you have to have the key programmed at your dealership.

The most technically advanced keys are known as smart keys. These keys only need to be in the proximity of the vehicle in order for the vehicle’s engine to be started with just the push of a button.
